Husted (1801 (or 1802)-1868), an attorney in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hiram was born in Connecticut and moved at an early age to Ohio with his parents. He went to Yale and graduated in 1823 with a law degree. After college he moved to Duplin County, North Carolina where he taught at the Green Academy (founded by fellow Yale members), and then moved to Smithfield in Johnston County to set up a law practice. In 1830 he married Harriet Adeline Slocumb (daughter of late congressman Jesse Slocum). The couple lost several children early on, and they removed to Raleigh in 1845 and continued in law and briefly edited a newspaper called "The Clarion." He was an ardent Henry Clay Whig. He was also known for his literary pursuits, and after his own paper folded (so to speak), he continued to publish in other local papers. He was known as "Maj. H. W. Husted," but it is doubtful that he served in the Civil War, and this title may have come from associations with the NC militia when he was younger.*****************************************Come visitour OPEN SHOP in Greensboro, North Carolina.Shop Hours: 10-6 Mondays ~~ Saturdays~~Closed on Sundays~~Pages Past -- Used & Rare Books / 1837 Spring Garden St. / Greensboro, N.C. 27403We BUY AND SELL Books every day!
